Not everyone is lucky to work in a cool and inspiring office, and even those who are, can become stuck in an uncreative rut, or disturbed by loud coworkers, boring music, smells of someone’s lunch, outside noise. And those who work at home have all of the distractions — and attractions — of home to lure mind and body away from productive work. No wonder coffee shops around the world look more like offices than many offices. People sitting at their computers, talking on their phones, conducting business with coffee and muffins nearby. Yet anyone who’s done the coffee-shop-as-office thing knows that it is not without problems either. Too many people, loud conversation, screaming kids, familiar faces, bad wifi, no plugs, uncomfortable chairs, line-ups for coffee, managers wanting you to leave.

Luckily, creative people have started to think up solutions to meet the very clear need of cool working spaces for mobile workers. Urban Station in Buenos Aires, Argentina, has taken the best of both office and coffee shop and wrapped it all up in a funky urban space.

La competencia en los negocios ha pasado de un foco en la eficiencia y el volumen como ventaja competitiva, a una gran cantidad de compañías que reconocen el poder de las ideas, la creatividad y la innovación. Sin embargo, las ideas innovadoras requieren libertad para sentarse, pensar, debatir, desafiar, lo que a su vez requiere tiempo no precisamente dentro de la oficina. El equipo de contenido de WOBI se reunió la semana pasada para dedicar tiempo a ello: una actividad de brainstorming en Urban Station, en nuestra ciudad cabecera, Buenos Aires. Edificio Urban Station San Telmo / Felipe Francisco Aguirre Arquitecto

Una construcción que data su origen en el año 1911, con un lenguaje arquitectónico de gran potencia visual y espacial. Desde el inicio se propuso revitalizar al máximo los lenguajes arquitectónicos existentes, recuperándolos, para preservarlos y revalorizarlos, siempre trabajando con el decidido contraste entre el ayer y el hoy.

El eje del proyecto se basó en aportes arquitectónicos que al ser ejecutados respondieran a los sistemas y las costumbres actuales. Gran parte del desafío consistía en devolverle al edificio su mística original y re-potenciarlo como parte de un desarrollo comercial, para poder entonces, con un lenguaje moderno, lograr un equilibrio perfecto y balanceado

Los office bar, la opción elegida por los trabajadores móviles

Ahí están, sentados en bares y cafés con la mirada clavada en la pantalla de su notebook o netbook, sin que nada ni nadie los distraiga. Algunos son turistas, otros estudiantes y muchos, la mayoría, trabajadores que, gracias a la tecnología, montan su oficina en bares que ofrecen acceso a Internet.

Pero hoy, con la conexión Wi-Fi no alcanza para atraer a estos teletrabajadores móviles o nómades, que en la Argentina ya son cerca de 1.200.000, según datos de 2008 de la consultora Carrier & Asociados. Además del servicio Wi-Fi exigen comodidad, ancho de banda, posibilidad de imprimir documentos y hasta lugares privados para celebrar reuniones.

With the increasing numbers of freelancers looking for a convenient place to sit and work, some bars are slightly becoming new types of offices. While the first generation of mobile workers is already more realistic about the convenience of working in a bar, lots of others are still inventing it as a new frontier of working in a relaxing atmosphere. Despite the unpleasant noise in most of the co-working bars and the difficult choice between too much coffee or the embarrassment of drinking too less in the eyes of the waiters, working from a bar is still very popular.
